What are B4J files and how to open them

What is a B4J file?

A .B4J file is a B4J Source Code file.

B4J Source Code files are plain-text source code files created and used by the B4J development environment from the B4X toolset by Anywhere Software. These files store the program logic, module definitions and global variables written in the B4X language for desktop, server or IoT applications. The B4J tool generates them as part of its project structure for defining behavior, handling events and organizing the code that later compiles to Java bytecode and runs on Windows, macOS, Linux or ARM boards.

B4J is a RAD (rapid application development) IDE that supports creating graphical UI apps, console utilities, web server back ends and IoT programs. B4J Source Code files are edited by developers inside B4J's IDE (or compatible editors), saved alongside other project assets like layout descriptions and libraries, and included in the project build whenever the application is compiled.

These files often start with a UTF-8 byte-order mark (bytes EF BB BF) and include specific keywords and structural markers such as SUB PROCESS_GLOBALS, SUB AppStart(...), END SUB, and design-metadata blocks like NUMBEROFMODULES, APPTYPE, VERSION and ENDOFDESIGNTEXT. These identify modules, global scopes, libraries, versioning, and the designer-generated portions of the code.

How to open B4J files

Important: Different programs may use files with the B4J file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your B4J file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
