What is an AXX file?
AXX files have multiple uses, and AxCrypt Encrypted Data is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.
AxCrypt Encrypted Data
Files with the extension .axx are encrypted files created and used by the encryption package, AxCrypt. AxCrypt is an encryption program that features seamless integration with Windows Explorer and contains an extensive command-line interface for scripting and programming. AXX file contains a file or group of files that are encrypted with AES (advanced encryption standard) which also includes password protection feature.
How to open AXX files
Important: Different programs may use files with the AXX file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AXX file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While AxCrypt Encrypted Data is a popular type of AXX-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .AXX file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.
ARJ Multi-file Archive
AXX is a file extension for an ARJ compressed multi-volume archive file. The xx characters in .axx format is a representation of the number of volumes that are stored in the archive. For example, the archive contains 75 compressed files, the name of the file will be "file.a75". Spanning files is a common strategy utilized when maximizing the storage on smaller media. All of the original volumes of a spanned archive need to be in the same directory in order to be extracted.
