AXS File
What are AXS files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening an AXS file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your AXS files.
What is an AXS file?
An .AXS file is an AXS Module file.
AXS Module files store entire musical compositions created by AXS, a realtime polyphonic multitimbral software synthesizer combined with a sampler and sequencer for the PC. These files hold instrument definitions (samples or presets), sound sequencing (note patterns, effects), song order, and related metadata. They are used by the AXS program (authored by Guido de Haan and Robert Morcus under the NewStyle/Resolution label) to save or play back music projects.
The AXS program produces these files internally when saving a song or preset bank. Typically the synthesizer generates a bank file (.BNK) for presets, while song/composition data including patterns and instruments get stored in a module file. Demo versions of AXS (e.g. version 2.02, released June 30, 1998) combine sampler, sequencer and sound engine, allowing playback of user-created multitimbral tracks, though some demo builds disable features like saving songs or exporting to WAV.
Internally the module file format uses a structured chunked form under a Resource Interchange File Format-like wrapper. It begins with a FORM header (bytes 0x464F524D: "FORM") at offset 0, includes the ID "AXSFUSER" at offset 8, and contains named chunks or sections such as INST (instruments), SHDR (sample headers), SONG (song order data), TRAK (track or pattern data), and auxiliary blocks marked by strings like INNM or BLOK. These tags allow AXS to locate the data needed to load instrument definitions, pattern structures, song timing and multitimbral voice assignment.
