What are AXR files and how to open them

What is an AXR file?

An .AXR file is an Elcomsoft Password Recovery Config file.

Elcomsoft Password Recovery Config files store saved attack settings for Elcomsoft's Advanced Archive Password Recovery (ARCHPR) tool. They capture every parameter of a password-recovery session - attack type, character set, mask or dictionary rules, length limits, auto-save behavior, output filenames, and priority settings - so the tool can restart or restore a session with the same setup.

These files are produced when a user "saves setup" in ARCHPR. Later the setup can be loaded - either via the "Read setup" button or by dragging the saved file into the ARCHPR window - so that all previously entered settings are restored and the attack can resume immediately if everything still applies.

Saved configurations may be run from the command line by specifying the config file instead of an archive filename. Overlaying command-line switches allows adjusting individual settings without manually rebuilding the setup GUI.

Files begin with an ASCII section header and keywords that reflect the saved options. Common identifiers include a "[common]" section with filename fields, settings for plaintext output, character-sets, whether to use dictionary or brute-force attacks, length boundaries like MINLEN and MAXLEN, mask or special character sets, and parameters like AUTOSAVEFILENAME or WINZIPPERCENT.

Important: Different programs may use files with the AXR file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AXR file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
