What are AXP files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening an AXP file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your AXP files.

What is an AXP file?

AXP files have multiple uses, and Avid / Pinnacle Studio Project is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Avid / Pinnacle Studio Project

These AXP files are project files that contain information about edited videos done in Pinnacle Studio, an audio and video editing software. Some of the saved information is the trimming, speed, the effects you added, and much more. You can create movies, videos, or short films using this software.

All known file formats using extension .AXP

While Avid / Pinnacle Studio Project is a popular type of AXP-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .AXP file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

CDBurnerXP Audio Compilation

CDBurnerXP Audio Compilation files are project files used by the CDBurnerXP software to save an audio CD compilation layout. They do not contain audio data themselves; instead they store metadata such as the names, paths, titles, artists, track numbers and durations of each source file, plus the compilation name, date, and total playback time. These files allow you to set up a session (which tracks to burn, in what order) and then later open it in CDBurnerXP to burn the disc without reselecting everything.

These files are created by CDBurnerXP, a Windows program for burning CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray, and HD-DVDs. When you prepare to burn an audio CD, CDBurnerXP can save the compilation layout as an .AXP file. You later reopen the .AXP to burn the audio CD; if any source files have been moved or deleted since, CDBurnerXP will report missing tracks. The .AXP file can be viewed with any text or XML editor, but it is only fully useful within CDBurnerXP.

Technically, .AXP files are plain XML documents, with a declaration like , followed by a DOCTYPE referencing audio.dtd, a layout element with type="Audio", a compilation element, and child track elements each with attributes such as path and track number.
