What are AXF files and how to open them

What is an AXF file?

AXF files have multiple uses, and Appearance EXchange Format is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Appearance EXchange Format

Appearance EXchange Format is a file format created by X-Rite for digitally capturing, storing, modifying, and sharing detailed physical material appearance information in a way that works across systems such as product lifecycle management, CAD, and rendering tools. It is especially used to represent not just color and texture, but also surface finish, gloss, reflection behavior, special effects like sparkles, and how appearance changes with viewing or lighting angle.

The format is binary and vendor-neutral. It supports a range of appearance models, from simpler spatially varying BRDFs (SVBRDF) to more complex measurements like BTF (bidirectional texture functions) and even BSSRDF for subsurface scattering. It is scalable for handling large data volumes, extensible for adding new material representations without breaking compatibility, and portable across operating systems with SDKs available for Windows and Linux and Mac support under development.

Typical workflow: physical material samples get measured with X-Rite's scanning devices to generate appearance data; that data becomes an AxF file. These files can be edited (for example, in Pantora or other host applications) whose material representations include parameters like diffuse color, specular color, roughness, normal maps, anisotropic rotation etc. They're then shared with rendering software, CAD or PLM systems to ensure consistency and realism across digital representations.

Internally, the format is identifiable by certain byte signatures near the beginning, by multiple internal strings denoting X-Rite namespaces and material model names (e.g. COM.XRITE.RESOURCELOOKUPOPERATOR, COM.XRITE.LAMBERTDIFFUSEMODEL, COM.XRITE.WARDSPECULARMODEL, SVBRDF, and many more), and by magic bytes such as ".HDF" at offset 0 and "OHDR" at offset 48.

How to open AXF files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AXF file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AXF file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While Appearance EXchange Format is a popular type of AXF-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .AXF file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

GP32 EXecutable Binary

GP32 eXecutable Binary files are runnable programs compiled for the Game Park GP32 handheld console. They are produced using the GP32 software development kit or third-party toolchains for ARM, and contain code (and optionally data for graphics, icons, etc.) designed to run directly on the GP32 hardware or in FreeLauncher. They are used when homebrew or non‐commercial software developers build applications for the GP32.

These binaries are generated by compiling (and linking) source code into a format the GP32 BIOS or FreeLauncher recognizes. They may include debug information, author/title metadata, or icon graphics. Once built, they are transferred (often via PC Link or SmartMedia Card) to the GP32 device. If they include encryption or are meant to be launched by FreeLauncher, extra steps such as XOR encryption may be applied.

The format is known by several extensions including the standard executable format itself, a "bin" form, or a "GXB" form. The "AXF" name specifically refers to an executable binary format similar to GXB but with debug symbols included. The header begins with ARM executable header fields for read-only, read/write, and zero-initialized sections, followed by identifier words such as 0x44450011 and other metadata identifying section boundaries.

The first few bytes of files in this format show the signature "EA 00 00 00 0C" at offset 1, repeating "0C" at multiple offsets (11, 15, 19, 23), and at offset 27 a string "ED…ED" (0x0C1100454411004544 in hex). These signatures help tools recognize the format.
