What are ASN files and how to open them

What is an ASN file?

An .ASN file is an Atlantis Word Processor Sound Scheme file.

Atlantis Word Processor sound scheme files store a complete sound-scheme used by Atlantis to play audible cues (events) in response to user actions. They define settings such as which sounds are used for events like keystrokes, typing, errors, toggling Caps Lock, etc., which events are enabled or disabled, a global volume setting relative to Windows, and optionally a "typewriter" style for certain key events. The file is created and used by the Atlantis Word Processor application by Rising Sun Solutions, Inc.

Atlantis writes these files when the user selects or creates a sound scheme, for example via Tools → Customize → Sounds. The user can browse for existing sound scheme files (with the ASN extension), switch between typewriter styles, associate different WAV files with individual events, clear custom sounds, enable or disable events, or disable sounds wholesale; the scheme file defines all of that. When a sound scheme is loaded by Atlantis, the sounds are played according to the rules stored in the scheme, at the scheme's volume level.

These scheme files begin with a header that identifies the format; for example at offset 0 there is ASCII text "DESCRIPTION…Sound Scheme for Atlantis Word Processor", followed later by keywords like "SOUND" around byte offset 71 and "EVENT" near byte offset 82.

How to open ASN files

Important: Different programs may use files with the ASN file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your ASN file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
