What are ASEC files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening an ASEC file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your ASEC files.
What is an ASEC file?
These ASEC files are normally found in devices that run on the Android OS. Also known as Android encrypted application packages, .asec files are stored in the SD card of the device where the associated Android app is installed. These files are integrated with ASEC encryption and compression technology. The .asec file format was introduced by Google with the release of Android 2.2. This version of the Android OS was the first one to allow the installation of applications in the Android device's SD card (instead of just in the device's internal memory). The Android OS can be used to move these ASEC files from the SD card to the device's internal memory. When this happens, the .asec file is decrypted and converted into the standard Android APK format. These ASEC files can only be opened by the Android OS of the device where the associated app has been installed, or by a supported Android SDK emulator. Generally classified as encoded or encrypted files, it's best to leave these ASEC files alone so as to ensure that its associated applications can continue to run properly in the Android device.
