What is an APEXBACKUP file?

An .APEXBACKUP file is an Android Apex Launcher Backup file.

Android Apex Launcher backup files store configuration settings and home-screen state exported by the Apex Launcher app for Android. They include a user's launcher settings (such as preferences, themes, icon layout) plus desktop layout data (folders, shortcuts), to allow restoring that state on the same or another device when switching phones or resetting the current one.

The launcher app creates the backup by exporting two internal data files named "apex_settings.bak" and "apex_data.bak", placing them inside a single archive. That archive is compressed using the ZIP format and written under the name shown in the evidence (with an extension). The usual workflow is: the user requests backup via Apex Launcher's built-in backup & restore menu, which writes the backup into the Android/data/apexlauncher folder; later, the restore function reads that file to reapply the settings and desktop layout.

Technically, the backup archive is a standard ZIP file beginning with the magic bytes PK 0x03 0x04, using ZIP version 2.0, with UTF-8 filename encoding and deflate compression. It contains at least two entries named apex_settings.bak and apex_data.bak in its top-level directory.

How to open APEXBACKUP files

Important: Different programs may use files with the APEXBACKUP file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your APEXBACKUP file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
