APEX File

What are APEX files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening an APEX file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your APEX files.

What is an APEX file?

An .APEX file is an AVM APEX Sample Studio Sound Bank file.

AVM APEX Sample Studio Sound Bank files bundle audio samples and instrument definitions used by AVM Sample Studio for the AVM APEX sound card. They store multiple sampled sounds, patches (including names, loop points, envelopes or low-frequency oscillators), layers or drum-kit groupings, so the card can play complex multi-part music without needing separate individual sample files. They complement the hardware sample ROM and RAM expansion on the AVM APEX card by supplying additional sounds for usage in synthesis or sound-playback.

These sound bank files are produced and used by AVM Technology for the Apex sound card with its built-in Kurzweil MA-1 based wavetable/sample engine. During normal workflow, owned users load or switch between these banks in the Sample Studio software; the sound card uses the data to generate its audio output under MIDI or patch control. No standard outside format defines editing or converting these files beyond what AVM or compatible sample-bank editors support.

The file begins with an ASCII signature identifying it as an AVM Sample Studio bank, followed by a bank name field. One known header is "AVMSampleStudio..." followed by spaces and then "Kurzweil" near the start. This signature appears at offset zero and is used to reliably distinguish these sound bank files.
