What are AOI files and how to open them

What is an AOI file?

An .AOI file is an Art Of Illusion 3D Scene file.

Art Of Illusion 3D Scene files store complete 3D workspaces created by the Art of Illusion program. They record all items visible in a rendered scene - objects' shapes, textures, materials, lights, cameras, animations, and scene settings. These files are used to save projects so the same setup can later be opened, edited, or rendered into stills or full animations.

These scene files are written and read exclusively by Art of Illusion, a Java-based open-source modeling, animation and rendering suite developed by Peter Eastman. Users build scenes by placing 3-D primitives, triangle meshes, spline meshes or tubes, assigning textures and materials (uniform, image-mapped, procedural 2D/3D), setting lights and cameras, and defining keyframes for animation. When saved, all these elements are captured so that later the scene can be resumed or output via photo-realistic or non-photo-realistic rendering.

The file format is binary and custom to Art of Illusion. It may include strings identifying subsystems like procedural or uniform textures, animation tracks, scene cameras, mesh and light objects. A few expected identifiers are strings such as "ARTOFILLUSION.PROCEDURAL." or "ARTOFILLUSION.ANIMATION.". Byte-level signatures may appear at fixed offsets - for example ASCII sequences like ".?\" at a particular offset.

How to open AOI files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AOI file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AOI file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
