What are AOM files and how to open them

What is an AOM file?

An .AOM file is an Adobe Download Manager file.

Adobe Download Manager files with the .AOM extension hold instructions and metadata used by Adobe's download tool to fetch and install software. When you download an Adobe application (for example, Adobe Reader), the download link provides a small .AOM file. Your operating system associates this file type with Adobe Download Manager (ADM). Double-clicking or otherwise opening an AOM file launches the ADM program, which parses the AOM file, saves its contents into a configuration file (named dm.ini in the user's AppData folder), and then proceeds to download the actual installer or application.

Adobe Download Manager creates .AOM files; users do not author them. The AOM file simply tells ADM what resources to download, where they are located, and how big they are. Once ADM has completed using the AOM file, the install process typically proceeds without further direct interaction with that file.

Inside an .AOM file you will find a text/XML‐like structure encoded in UTF-8 that begins with a version declaration such as "" followed soon after by "AdobeDownloadManager". Other tags and keywords include HTTP addresses for Adobe servers, store or download identifiers, flags indicating whether the download is cancelable or non-execute, size data, and metadata about the product being downloaded.
