What are ANX files and how to open them

What is an ANX file?

An .ANX file is a HotDocs Answer file.

A HotDocs Answer File stores the user's responses gathered during an interview in HotDocs so those answers can later be reused to fill in one or more templates without re-typing. It is created by HotDocs when running a test interview using the Save Answers or Open Answers function, and its primary use is during template development and testing.

These .ANX files are written in XML according to the HotDocs Answer File Schema. They record values entered for named variables (for example person first name, date of birth, multiple choice answers) including repeated values for variables defined to accept more than one entry. Templates assembled later using the same .ANX file will always produce the same output document, provided the template's variables match those in the answer file.

Answer files with the .ANX extension are produced by HotDocs and used only by HotDocs. In older versions (HotDocs 6-2008), binary format answer files existed under .ANS; starting with HotDocs 2009, all answer files are XML under .ANX (though .ANS might still appear as an extension for backwards compatibility).
