What are ANM2 files and how to open them

What is an ANM2 file?

An .ANM2 file is a The Binding Of Isaac: Rebirth Animation file.

The Binding Of Isaac: Rebirth Animation format is used by the game The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth to define animated image content that appears on-screen, including character actions, effects, user interface elements, and any pictorial animation tied to game sprites. Each file stores animation data so the game engine knows what to draw, how sprites change over time, which images to load, and how different parts (e.g. limbs, effects) move or transform. These files are written by the game's tools or mods when creating or customizing animations, and read by the game engine at runtime when rendering moving graphics.

It is created and edited by the official Isaac Animation Editor that comes with the game under tools/IsaacAnimationEditor, or by third-party editors such as Anm2Ed. Modders use it to build new animation behaviors, change existing animations, or combine spritesheets with layering, events, and timing so that final animation sequences play properly in game.

Internally, the format is XML-based (though saved with a game-specific extension), with a root element called AnimatedActor. Under that are metadata ("Info") including creation date, version, and framerate; "Content" defining spritesheets, layers, null-points (placeholders for moving parts), and events; and "Animations" which define multiple named animations with frames, including root animation (affecting all layers), layer-specific and null-specific animations. Frame tags specify position, scaling, visibility, tints, cropping, rotation, and whether interpolation is used. Other fields include attributes such as Name, FrameNum, Loop, SpritesheetId, LayerName, XPivot/YPivot etc.

The file can be identified by its XML signature: it begins with the ASCII header <AnimatedActor> at offset 0, followed by additional keywords such as ANIMATIONS DEFAULTANIMATION, SPRITESHEET PATH, LAYERANIMATIONS, ROOTANIMATION, SPRITESHEETS, LAYERS, NULLS, EVENTS, and LOOP among others.
