What are ALS files and how to open them

What is an ALS file?
ALS files have multiple uses, and MPEG-4 ALS (Audio Lossless coding Standard) is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.
MPEG-4 ALS (Audio Lossless coding Standard)
These ALS files contain audio in Audio Lossless Coding Standard format, which is a part of the MPEG-4 Part 3 standard. These ALS files combine short and long-term predictors to improve the compression for sound with rich harmonics.
How to open ALS files
Important: Different programs may use files with the ALS file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your ALS file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While MPEG-4 ALS (Audio Lossless coding Standard) is a popular type of ALS-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .ALS file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.
Psion Serie 3 Application Alias
We know that one ALS format is Psion Serie 3 Application Alias. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.
