What is an ACTIVEGSXML file?

ACTIVEGSXML files have multiple uses, and ActiveGS iOS configuration is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

ActiveGS iOS configuration

ActiveGSXML files are Apple II/IIGS software disk images that can be run using the multi-platform, multi-browser Apple II emulator developed by Oliver Goguel. ActiveGS comes in two forms: a browser plug-in, and the other is an app that you can download via the App Store. You use the plugin to play games in the Waterfox Classic browser. The plugin uses XML coding language, so by modifying the default.activegsxml file in a simple text editor, you can define which disk image to launch.

All known file formats using extension .ACTIVEGSXML

While ActiveGS iOS configuration is a popular type of ACTIVEGSXML-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .ACTIVEGSXML file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

ActiveGS PC Configuration

ActiveGS PC Configuration files store settings used by the ActiveGS emulator for Apple II / IIGS, specifically on Windows or PC-based installations. These configuration files define which disk images to load, how the virtual machine should behave, and some visual and operational preferences. They are created by the ActiveGS standalone application from the Free Tools Association.

These files are edited when you change emulator settings such as disk speed, boot disk slot, background or icon images, or naming and dating entries. After editing, the configuration file guides how the emulator launches - choosing which image to boot, what icon to show, etc. Users will typically open these files via the emulator's built-in menu or by selecting a PC Configuration option within ActiveGS.

These files are plain text in XML format. A file begins with the standard XML declaration (e.g. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="…">) at offset zero. It includes identifiable field-names such as NAME, YEAR, DISK, SPEED, BOOTSLOT, IMAGE SLOT, BACKGROUND, ICON, CONFIG VERSION, FORMAT, BRAMPARAM, among others. These keywords help the emulator parse the configuration.

Various apps that use files with this extension

These apps are known to open certain types of ACTIVEGSXML files. Remember, different programs may use ACTIVEGSXML files for different purposes, so you may need to try out a few of them to be able to open your specific file.
