What are ACX files and how to open them

What is an ACX file?

An .ACX file is an Adobe Encore Project Media List file.

Adobe Encore Project Media List is a file type used by Adobe Encore when building DVD or Blu-ray authoring projects. The file serves as a media list that records all the media assets (video, audio, images, etc.) that have been imported into the project, along with settings and properties for those assets. It allows Encore to track which media files are used and the parameters with which they were set up as part of the project.

Files with the .acx extension are created automatically by Adobe Encore during project authoring. Encore writes this file into the project folder to store metadata such as codec settings (audio and video), storage version, platform, context preset, and other project-wide properties. When the project is later opened or published (e.g. burned to disc or output to folder), Encore reads this .acx file to reconstitute the media list and asset settings.

On a technical level, .acx is XML-based and begins with a standard XML declaration plus an EncoreProject root element. The signature includes "<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"…EncoreProject xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="EncoreProject.xsd" platform="…" etc. Fields appearing inside include tags like CONTEXTPRESET, STORAGEVERSION, AUDIOCODEC among others that identify both media and project configuration.

How to open ACX files

Important: Different programs may use files with the ACX file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your ACX file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
