What is an A2THEME file?

An .A2THEME file is an Aston 2 Theme file.

Aston 2 Theme files are used by the Aston2 desktop software from Gladiators Software to change how Windows looks. These files store a complete graphical theme - including the appearance of the Start menu, desktop background, system panels, widgets, and decorative elements. When you apply one, your desktop shell is transformed with new icons, images, layouts, and decorations designed by theme creators.

Gladiators Aston creates .a2theme files. They function as compressed theme packages that include XML layout files and image assets. Each theme package holds files like Start Button.xml, Clock.xml, Calendar.xml, Panel.xml among many others defining different parts of the interface; it also includes PNG or JPG graphic files used for backgrounds, icons, frames etc. When you install a theme via Aston2, it reads these definitions and renders them accordingly.

Technically, .a2theme files are standard ZIP archives (beginning with the two-byte signature PK at offset 0) containing XML files for layout and configuration and PNG/JPG or other image files. They include internal identifiers like "START BUTTON.XMLPK", "RECYCLE BIN.XMLPK", "A2PANEL.XMLPK", "WEATHER.XMLPK" and keywords such as "IHDR", "IEND", "RAIN_SNOW", "MOON" among others, which help Aston2 recognize the components of the theme.

How to open A2THEME files

Important: Different programs may use files with the A2THEME file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your A2THEME file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
