XZ File - opening and understanding

Did your computer fail to open an XZ file? We explain what they are used for and recommend software that we know can open or otherwise handle your .XZ files.

What is an XZ file?

An .XZ file is an XZ compressed file. The .xz file extension is used for LZMA2 compressed files. It is the same compression algorithm used in 7Z files used by 7-Zip. However, XZ files are single compressed files, as the XZ file format does not support archiving (bundling of multiple files into one). In that regard, it is similar to BZIP2 or Z files, but XZ offers a better compression ratio.

How to open XZ files

You will need a program compatible with the specific file you are trying to open, as different programs may use files with file extension XZ for different purposes. We have identified 4 XZ openers for Windows that is compatible with this specific type of XZ file.
