Opening XZ files

Did your computer fail to open a XZ file? We explain what XZ files are and recommend software that we know can open or convert your XZ files.

What is a XZ file?

The .xz file extension is used for a compressed archive file format that was created by Tukaani Developers. These XZ files are generated by the XZ Utils software, which is a file compression and decompression tool that was also created by Tucaani Developers. This software is designed to run in Linux and Unix platforms.

These XZ files may contain one or more files and folders. The content of these .xz files are integrated with high compression ratio, which significantly reduces the size of the compressed files inside an XZ archive.

To open these .xz files, simply use the XZ Utils software. The PeaZIP file compression and decompression tool for Windows platforms can also be used to extract the content of these XZ files. RAR for Android, which is also a file compression and decompression program for Android platforms, can also be used to decompress and extract the files and folders inside these .xz files.

Try a universal file viewer

In addition to the products listed above, I would suggest that you try a universal file viewer like Free File Viewer. It can open over 200 different types of files - and very likely yours too! Download Free File Viewer.
