Opening XLSB files

Did your computer fail to open a XLSB file? We explain what XLSB files are and recommend software that we know can open or convert your XLSB files.

What is a XLSB file?

The .xlsb file format is used in files created by programs that generate documents using spreadsheets and forms like Microsoft Excel application. XLSB stands for "Excel Spreadsheet- binary". XLSB are Excel files are different from .xlsx (a more common form of Excel Workbook) in terms of formatting and speed.

XLSB files contain information that is written or encoded in binary format instead of the typical XML format commonly used in other Excel files. And because XLSB files are in binary format, they can be read and written much faster, making them extremely useful for very large spreadsheets. This characteristic of .xlsb also makes the files faster to calculate, encouraging efficient use of memory storage since the size of .xlsb is smaller compared to .xlsx files.

But here is the catch, if you are using older versions of Microsoft Excel such as 2003 version or earlier, they do not support .xlsb files. And also if you are using other spreadsheet application, aside from MS Excel, linking.xlsb files with other programs might cause some problems which can render the file unreadable. Make sure to use applications that are completely compatible with .xlsb files.
