What is an XBK file?

An .XBK file is a SMART Board Slide Collection file.

SMART Board Slide Collection (.XBK) files are lesson or presentation files made by SMART Technologies for use with SMART Notebook (formerly SMART Board Software). They store interactive classroom content such as slides, digital ink, images, shapes, text, and multimedia, allowing teachers to prepare and deliver lessons using a SMART interactive display.

When you save a file in SMART Notebook version 8, 9.0 or 9.1, you can choose the .XBK format so that it can be opened by those older versions. SMART Notebook version 10.0 and later use the .NOTEBOOK format as the default, but still support .XBK for backward-compatibility. However, .XBK does not support some newer objects or properties added after version 9; those elements may be lost or saved in a non-editable form when a file is saved as .XBK.

Technical signature: files begin with an XML header indicating version 1.0, UTF-8 encoding, then an element named "xbk" with XML namespaces such as "http://www.smarttech.com/XMLNotebook" and "http://www.w3.org/2000/svg", and include tags and attributes like FileSource, SVG, stroke-width, stroke-linejoin, height, width, group, title, and point coordinates.
