What is an X3D file?

An .X3D file is an Extensible 3D Vector Graphics file.

Extensible 3D Vector Graphics (.x3d) is a file that describes 3D scenes - objects, lighting, materials, animation, and user interaction - using an openly published, royalty-free standard. It is produced by tools or exporters that support the X3D standard, and designed so that applications (browsers, viewers, editors) can read it to display, animate, or otherwise work with full 3D virtual environments.

This format uses a scene-graph architecture: the 3D scene is represented as a hierarchy of nodes defining shape, appearance, transformations, prototypes, and event routing. It works with a base specification (ISO/IEC 19775) for defining these components and extensions. Various "profiles" provide subsets of node types for tasks such as interchange, interactivity, medical or CAD scenes, so that simpler or more constrained applications can implement only what they need.

There are multiple ways to encode X3D data. The .x3d extension refers to the XML encoding (ISO/IEC 19776-1) which is human-readable (UTF-8 text), self-validating under XML schemas, and integrates well with Web technologies. Other encodings include a classic VRML style and compressed binary form. Typical use involves creating or exporting a scene in a 3D authoring tool, then viewing or embedding it using web-based or standalone viewers.

Internally, an XML-encoded X3D .x3d file starts with the XML declaration (for example, "<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>") followed by a root <X3D> element which includes attributes like PROFILE (defining the node set), and scene components. Key element names include SCENE, PROTOTYPE (PROTO), and nodes defining geometry, appearance, and behavior.
