What are WORKSPACE files and how to open them

What is a WORKSPACE file?

WORKSPACE files have multiple uses, and Code::Blocks Workspace is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

How to open WORKSPACE files

Important: Different programs may use files with the WORKSPACE file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your WORKSPACE file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

All known file formats using extension .WORKSPACE

While Code::Blocks Workspace is a popular type of WORKSPACE-file, we know of 3 different uses of the .WORKSPACE file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

CodeLite Workspace

We know that one WORKSPACE format is CodeLite Workspace. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.

Proteus Workspace

Proteus Workspace files are used by the Proteus Design Suite (Labcenter Electronics) to preserve the state of a project's workspace. They store which modules (schematic, layout, bill of materials, etc.) were open, how windows and panels were arranged on the screen, and which monitors and frames they occupied. When you close a project and later reopen it, Proteus reads its .WORKSPACE file so the layout and open modules appear just as they were.

Each .WORKSPACE file is an XML-based configuration file. It does not include the actual design data (schematics, PCB layouts, component definitions) - those are kept in the project file (.PDSPRJ) and related files. The workspace file concerns only the user-interface metadata for the project session.

Internally the file begins with a standard XML declaration (version 1.0, UTF-8 encoding) and contains strings such as FRAME ACTIVEWINDOW, MODULE NAME, WINDOW TYPE, STANDALONE, PLACEMENT, WORKSPACE, VSMDEBUG and DEFAULT. These tags describe individual windows, their types, placements and which modules are active.
