What is a WHX file?

A .WHX file is a WinHex Backup file.

The WinHex Backup format is a file format used by the Windows utility WinHex (from X-Ways Software) for saving backups of files or groups of disk sectors. Users create .whx files either manually or via automated backup functions; these files can store the contents of individual files, logical drives, physical disk sectors, or disk partitions. They are useful when preserving data for recovery or undoing changes.

A .whx file is produced by WinHex when you select "Make Backup Copy" or related "Create Backup" operations; you can back up a normal file, an entire logical drive, physical disk partitions, or even specific sectors within a disk. The backup file may be compressed and/or encrypted, and backups can be split into multiple segments of a chosen size for archiving or portability. When needed, WinHex can restore from .whx files back to files or sectors of a drive.

Files in this format begin with the ASCII header "WHX Backup v1.0" followed immediately by a null byte.
