What are WFM files and how to open them

What is a WFM file?

WFM files have multiple uses, and Pro Tools Waveform Cache is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Pro Tools Waveform Cache File

WFM Pro Tools waveform caches are a file type employed in Avid Pro Tools, a widely used Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) program for music creation, audio post-production, and sound engineering.

These files provide an on-screen visualization of a session's sound wave and can improve the program's responsiveness by displaying waveform previews more quickly.

Whenever a Pro Tools session is initiated, a WFM file is generated for each audio file within the session. The WFM file stores visual information of an audio waveform, which is then displayed in the software's editing window.

DBase Form File

A dBASE Form File is used to define the layout and behaviour of a form (a window or user-interface screen) inside a dBASE application. It records how form elements - labels, buttons, text entry fields, data-linked objects - are arranged, what data sources they connect to, and what code runs in response to user actions. Developers use forms to build interactive data entry, reporting or display windows in dBASE or dBASE SE.

This file is produced by the Form Designer (or Form Wizard) inside dBASE. The designer creates a .WFM text-based source file that includes: bootstrap code which instantiates and opens the form when run; a CLASS definition for the form, listing its components, positions, sizes, property values and events; optional header comments; and sometimes additional class or function definitions beyond the main form class. The form can be edited visually or by editing the source text directly. When the form is run in dBASE, the code in the .WFM file is executed to load the visual layout and behaviour.

The structure of a .WFM file begins with an optional header section (often comment lines), followed by bootstrap code that determines how the form is opened (modal or modeless), followed by the main CLASS definition of the form and its components. After the CLASS block, there may be a General section with other functions or classes. One key internal marker is the line "** END HEADER -- do not remove this line" which separates the optional header from the generated bootstrap code.
