What are WAR files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a WAR file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your WAR files.
What is a WAR file?
A .WAR file is a Java Web Archive file.
Files with file extension WAR are Web Application Archives. Each of these files contains a web service written in the Java programming language. The file is meant to be run on a web server supporting Java so that you can access it through your web browser.
However, the format is similar to JAR, an archive format many decompression tools can read, so if you need to peek inside a WAR file to look at the included resources like JAR files, servlets, JSP files, HTML files, etc. it is certainly possible.
