Opening VMDK files

Did your computer fail to open a VMDK file? We explain what VMDK files are and recommend software that we know can open or convert your VMDK files.

What is a VMDK file?

Files that contain the .vmdk file extension are Virtual Machine Disk Files. These files store the contents of a "virtual" hard disk that has been created by the VMware virtual hard drive software.

The VMDK files that are created by the VMware software can be used like an actual hard drive to store information and back up important computer data. The virtual hard disk can be made up of one or multiple VMDK files.

The number of VMDK files that are contained on a virtual hard disk will depend on the size of the virtual disk and how much data that a user has stored on it.

Try a universal file viewer

In addition to the products listed above, I would suggest that you try a universal file viewer like Free File Viewer. It can open over 200 different types of files - and very likely yours too! Download Free File Viewer.
