What are VEM files and how to open them

What is a VEM file?

VEM files have multiple uses, and Sony Virtual Expander compressed data is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Sony Virtual Expander compressed data

Files that contain the .vem file extension are associated with the Sony Virtual Expander file compression utility. This software tool is included on Sony Micro Vault flash drive devices. When a file is compressed with the Sony Virtual Expander file compression utility, it is saved in the VirtualExpander_WW folder as a VEM file.

When the files are taken out of this folder, they are automatically decompressed and return to the full file size. Sony created the VEM file format to save space on the Micro Vault flash drives. Because the files with the .vem suffix are compressed, they take up less drive space than the files' uncompressed form.
