How to open VEM files
Did your computer fail to open a VEM file? We explain what VEM files are and recommend software that we know can open or convert your files.
What is a VEM file?
We know of 2 different uses of the VEM file type, one of them being Sony Virtual Expander compressed data. Read the details below.
The VEM file extension indicates to your device which app can open the file. However, different apps may use the same file extension for different types of data. So a VEM opener may not be able to open all kinds of VEM files. In this case, look through both formats to make sure you find the best suited VEM viewer.
Sony Virtual Expander compressed data
Files that contain the .vem file extension are associated with the Sony Virtual Expander file compression utility. This software tool is included on Sony Micro Vault flash drive devices. When a file is compressed with the Sony Virtual Expander file compression utility, it is saved in the VirtualExpander_WW folder as a VEM file.
When the files are taken out of this folder, they are automatically decompressed and return to the full file size. Sony created the VEM file format to save space on the Micro Vault flash drives. Because the files with the .vem suffix are compressed, they take up less drive space than the files' uncompressed form.
MM Video E-Mail
Through our analysis of VEM files, we know that one use of the format is MM Video E-Mail. We have not yet described in detail what these files contain and what they are used for, but our team is working tiredlessly through thousands of file formats. We'd love hearing from you if you have information about the format.
