Steam Install Script

Steam Install Script (.VDF) is a configuration file used by Steam to automate setup tasks needed before a game works correctly.

These files are created by game developers using the Steamworks SDK as part of a build and uploaded with the game's install depots. They contain instructions Steam runs automatically during installation or first launch. Common tasks defined in these scripts include creating registry entries under keys like HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, installing redistributable software such as DirectX or Visual C++ runtimes, or running setup executables.

When Steam installs a game or its DLC, it checks whether any install script is flagged in the depot manifest. If so, it downloads the script, validates its cryptographic signature, then executes the actions described. It can also include OS-version checks, silent execution flags, cleanup behavior, and actions for uninstall. These rules ensure necessary prerequisites are set up without user intervention.

Technically the file is in Valve's KeyValues format under a section named InstallScript. It uses quoted strings to pair keys and values and nested blocks to represent actions like "Registry" or "Run Process." The file often includes fields such as HasRunKey, Command, NoCleanUp, and language-specific subkeys. The presence of registry paths like HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE is a strong internal identifier.
