Sony Playstation VAB Audio Body File

The Sony Playstation uses proprietary formats for sound and music. SEQ files for music sequences, and VAB files for sounds. VAB is often represented as separate two files, namely a VH file containing the header and a VB file containing the body.

Beam Software SIFF Video

Beam Software SIFF Video is a multimedia format used in older PC games created by Beam Software. It is designed for storing synchronized video and sound content in a single file, most commonly with the .VB extension. This format appears in titles like The Lost Vikings II and Dethkarz.

Files with this format are produced by the game engine or movie playback routines in Beam Software's games. They hold both video frames (often with palette or sometimes raw RGB data) and audio samples together. These files are played during gameplay to show cutscenes or cinematic sections.

The internal structure begins with a four-character signature "SIFF" at the start of the file, followed by a second signature "VBV1VBHD" located at offset 8. The "VBHD" chunk holds video header information including version, dimensions, frame count, audio sample rate and whether there is audio. The rest of the file is divided into "BODY" chunks containing interleaved video and audio frames; flags indicate whether each block has video, audio, both, palette changes, duration etc.
