What is an UPX file?

An .UPX file is an Ulead Photo Express Image file.

Ulead Photo Express Image (.UPX) files are image files used by Ulead Photo Express, a photo editing and creative design application from Ulead Systems (later acquired by Corel). These files store images with separate, editable objects - such as text, clipart, or frames - so you can reopen the file and further adjust or reposition individual parts without flattening them.

When you edit photos in Ulead Photo Express and want to preserve objects so they can be modified later, you save them in .UPX format for images. This format differs from formats like JPEG that merge all content into a single bitmap; instead, objects remain "free-floating" and layered. Typical workflows include creating or modifying an image, saving as .UPX to retain editability, and later exporting or converting to standard formats (JPEG, BMP, TIFF) for sharing or printing.

Technically, .UPX files begin with a compound file header (bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 at offset 0), matching the Microsoft OLE Compound File signature. They contain identifiable strings such as "U-LEAD SYSTEMS", "ROOT ENTRY", "IMAGE OBJ-0", "RESULT IMAGE", "RESOLUTION-0", and "JFIF". These markers help identify the file internally and indicate its structure of separate objects and embedded bitmaps.
