What is an UNR file?

An .UNR file is an Unreal Map file.

A Unreal Map (.UNR) file is a game level file used by early versions of the Unreal Engine, including Unreal and Unreal Tournament. These files store the complete layout, geometry, objects, lighting, textures, actor placements and other environmental data needed to render one playable level. Community tools like UnrealEd allow designers and modders to create, edit and build .UNR maps.

Every .UNR map is stored as a kind of Unreal package. The engine uses the package format to contain all sorts of resources - such as textures, compiled scripts, sounds and music - even though the .UNR extension specifically designates that the package is a map ("MyLevel") with brushes and actors making up the playable space. When designing a map, authors define geometry using constructive solid geometry (CSG), place actors and lights, and build the level in UnrealEd; then .UNR files are loaded by the game engine to allow gameplay.

Technically, .UNR files begin with a signature (hex bytes C1 83 2A 9E at offset 0) identifying the Unreal package format, followed by version and table data. Embedded within the file are keywords like INDEX.UNR, LEVELSUMMARY, POINTREGION, TEXTURE, PACKAGE, LIGHT, CLASS, MODEL, BRUSH, POLYS, VECTOR, LOCATION, ROTATION, SHOWFLAGS, among others, which represent structural elements such as actors, geometry, scaling, and textures.
