All known file formats using extension .TTC
While OpenType Font Collection is a popular type of TTC-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .TTC file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.
TrueType Font Collection
TrueType Font Collection files (.TTC) package two or more fonts together in a single container so that fonts sharing many glyphs or other internal tables don't duplicate data. This makes them useful for font families or for languages like Japanese, where many characters are common across styles. Applications and operating systems that work with fonts can load each individual font ("sub-font") from the collection as if it were a standalone TrueType/OpenType font.
A .TTC file is produced by font design tools or conversion utilities that merge separate TrueType or OpenType font files into one collection. Once created, each sub-font's name, metrics, and character mapping are preserved, even as they point to shared components. The collection may include digital signatures for the entire file rather than per font, so that integrity and permissions apply globally.
Internally, a TTC file begins with a TTC header at offset 0 of the file. That header starts with the tag "ttcf", followed by a version (1.0 or 2.0), the number of fonts contained, and offsets locating each font's directory. Version 2.0 may also include a DSIG (digital signature) section with its tag ("DSIG"), length, and offset if a signature is present.
