What are TMPL files and how to open them

What is a TMPL file?

TMPL files have multiple uses, and EMule Web Interface Template is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

EMule Web Interface Template

EMule Web Interface Template files are used by the eMule program to define the appearance and layout of its Web Interface feature. The Web Interface (also called WebServer) lets users access and control eMule remotely via a web browser; the .TMPL file organizes how the interface looks, what graphic elements (images) are shown, and which sections (home page, server list, download/upload queues, preferences) appear.

These template files are written and maintained by the developers of eMule and are either included in the program's release package or available for download from the official eMule site. Users enable the Web Interface in eMule's settings, ensure a valid .TMPL template is located (by default in the installation directory, in newer versions in the "config" directory), and if needed, choose a different path. If no valid template is found, eMule shows an error ("Can't load templates: Can't open file …/eMule.tmpl"). Resources such as image files required by the template must be placed in a folder named "Webserver" inside eMule's installation folder.

Technically, .TMPL template files begin with a byte signature of ASCII ".--" at the start of the file. They contain marker strings that correspond to sections in the web interface, such as "--TMPL_TRANSFER_UP_QUEUE_LINE--", "--TMPL_TRANSFER_DOWN_HEADER--", "--TMPL_HEADER_STYLESHEET--", "EMULEAPPNAME", and many others. These strings delimit header, footer, list, and line segments used by eMule to build the various parts of the Web Interface. Their content is plain text (template code), not binary.
