Opening TCX files

Did your computer fail to open a TCX file? We explain what TCX files are and recommend software that we know can open or convert your TCX files.

What is a TCX file?

The .tcx file extension is used for a proprietary database data file format that was developed by Garmin Ltd. Also known as Garmin XML database files, these TCX files are generated by the Garmin Training Center software, which was also created by Garmin Ltd. This is a Windows and Mac OS X program that allows users to log their fitness and exercise activities for more convenient tracking purposes.

These TCX files are XML formatted data files that are used to export and import fitness and exercise logs between Garmin Training Center programs in different computers and Garmin devices. There are two versions of the TCX file format, namely TCX1 and TCX2. Recent versions of the Garmin Training Center software have support for both TCX file format versions.

These .tcx files can only be used through the Garmin Training Center program. It's best to leave these TCX files alone, in order for Garmin Training Center and other associated Garmin devices to continue working properly.

Try a universal file viewer

In addition to the products listed above, I would suggest that you try a universal file viewer like Free File Viewer. It can open over 200 different types of files - and very likely yours too! Download Free File Viewer.
