What are SMV files and how to open them

What is a SMV file?

SMV files have multiple uses, and SmithMicro Video is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

SmithMicro Video

Files that contain the .smv file extension are most commonly associated with mail video files that are used by the VideoLink software application. The SMV file format is used to send videos via email and to record video conferences.

This SMV video format was originally developed by SmithMicro, although support of the file format has been discontinued.

How to open SMV files

Important: Different programs may use files with the SMV file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your SMV file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

SigmaTel Motion Video

The .smv file suffix is also used for SigmaTel Motion Video files. These files contain video files in a simple file format and are meant to be played on a variety of portable media players that have the ability for video playback.

Snes9x Movie Capture

Snes9x is a portable, freeware Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) emulator. It makes it possible to play most Super Nintendo games on your PC. These SMV files are videos captured of games played in the emulator.
