What is a SMGXML file?

A .SMGXML file is a 3DVIA Composer Model file.

3DVIA Composer Model files with the extension .smgxml are part of Dassault Systèmes's 3DVIA Composer (also known in some documentation as CATIA or SolidWorks Composer) and are used for storing exploded "shattered"-structure product models - that is, very large assemblies whose geometry, views, animation scenarios, and structure have been split into separate files rather than kept in one monolithic bundle. These files support workflows where individual subassemblies or components can be updated, reused, or loaded on demand, which helps with editing large or complex designs and managing frequent updates.

When you use 3DVIA Composer to export or save a "fully-shattered" product, the .smgxml file is the XML file that describes the product's assembly structure (which actor is in which place, the parts' hierarchy, viewport properties, and which views or animations apply), while associated companion files like .smgGeom hold the actual geometry, .smgView define views, and .smgSce define scenarios or animations. Because they are separated, you can update the model's structure without regenerating all geometry.

The .smgxml format begins with a standard XML header - bytes at offset zero read as in ASCII - and contains key identifiers like "DISPLAYDATA.ASSEMBLYTREE.VIEWS.ALPHABETICSORT" that are unique to the XML schema used by 3DVIA Composer.
