What are SMG files and how to open them

What is a SMG file?

A .SMG file is a 3DVIA Composer Model file.

A 3DVIA Composer Model file with the extension ".SMG" is a proprietary 3D model and scene file used by Dassault Systèmes' 3DVIA Composer (also known now as SOLIDWORKS Composer). It is used when you want to deliver or view a fully rendered product or assembly design with its geometry, structure, view layouts, animations, and metadata all bundled into one self-contained file.

These .SMG files are created by exporting or saving within 3DVIA Composer after importing CAD data (from SOLIDWORKS or other CAD tools). The .smg serves as the default (monolithic) Composer format: it embeds all necessary parts of a Composer project - including geometry, view definitions, animations, and product structure - so the file can be shared, viewed, or played without needing to reference separate component files.

Technically, a .smg file is an archive format: it contains several internal files when unpacked including an XML file for model structure (assembly hierarchy, viewport properties), a binary geometry file for model shapes, and other files defining view states, animations, and possibly outlines. The file begins with a signature of bytes "SMGPK" at offset zero; it must also contain string markers such as "PRODUCT.SMGGEOMPK" and "PRODUCT.SMGXMLPK" within, indicating its internal components.
