What is a SHP file?
The .shp file extension is used for a proprietary data file format, which was created by Autodesk for one of their CAD (computer aided design) programs. Also known as AutoCAD shape files and AutoCAD source files, these SHP files contain code and graphical formatting attributes that are used for text fonts in AutoCAD projects. This CAD software was developed by Autodesk, Inc.Also classified as 3D multimedia files, these SHP files are formatted in ASCII and contain shape parameters for text fonts. These .shp files are loaded when CAD projects with text fonts that use these .shp files are opened in the AutoCAD software. These .shp files may also be used by other Autodesk programs. Users are recommended to leave these SHP files alone, in order for CAD projects in AutoCAD or other Autodesk programs to function properly, especially those that use text fonts with shape parameters stored in these SHP files.
