What are SDTID files and how to open them

What is a SDTID file?

A .SDTID file is a SecurID Soft Token file.

A SecurID Soft Token file with the .sdtid extension contains the private data and metadata needed for RSA's SecurID software-based one-time password (OTP) authentication system. It is produced by RSA tools such as Authentication Manager or the RSA SecurID Software Token utility. An administrator issues the .sdtid file to a user during software token assignment via file-based distribution. The user later installs or imports this file into the RSA SecurID Token (or Authenticator) app, often providing an installation password or PIN, and the app uses it to generate the periodic OTPs required for login.

Inside the .sdtid file are both secret and descriptive information: the cryptographic seed used by the token algorithm, the serial number that identifies the token, the expiration date, the number of digits in each generated tokencode, possibly device attributes such as form factor, copy protection features, batch certificate and signature fields. If the token file is password-protected, the seed and related fields are encrypted; importing or converting the token requires that password. Once imported, the file is usually stored locally and hidden from normal view.

Technically the .sdtid format is XML-based. Files begin with an XML header ("<?xml") at offset zero. Internal XML tags include field names such as DEFTIMEDERIVEDSEEDS, DEVICESERIALNUMBER, SECRET, VERSION, DEFALG, USERLOGIN, DEFINTERVAL, DEFDIGITS, TOKENATTRIBUTES, BATCHSIGNATURE, HEADERMAC, and others. These tags locate critical data like seed and metadata.
