What is RSA SecurID Token?
RSA SecurID Tokens are password-generators for SecurID authentication technology: they may be hard tokens or soft tokens, with the chief distinction between the two, being that hard tokens come as hardware/password-generating physical devices while soft tokens are software/password-generating applications that can be hosted on a (separate) physical device, like a smartphone.
The hard tokens come in a number of forms: one of the most popular emulates a typical credit card in shape, although it is slightly thicker due to the mechanisms within it. A small window on the device displays the generated password. Another type of hard token looks like a portable USB device. The soft tokens, of course, are merely apps/programs that are installed in compatible devices.
The SecurID tokens work by generating what is referred to as a one-time password every 60 seconds. This is necessary for authenticating an authorized user trying to gain access to something—an organizational resource or database, for example. The one-time password is typically used in combination with another passcode, often a personal security or identification number unique to the user. This results in two layers of authentication security.
