SAZ File
What are SAZ files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a SAZ file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your SAZ files.
What is a SAZ file?
A .SAZ file is a Fiddler Session Archive Zip file.
Fiddler Session Archive ZIP (SAZ) is a file format used to collect and save web traffic (HTTP, HTTPS, WebSocket, and gRPC) captured by the Fiddler suite of tools for later analysis. Files of this type are generated when you invoke the "Save All Sessions" or export functionality within Fiddler, Fiddler Everywhere, Fiddler Classic, or FiddlerCore. Their main purpose is to record the complete sequence of network requests and responses made during a browsing or application session, together with metadata about those exchanges so that developers or analysts can inspect, debug, or troubleshoot issues at a later time.
When a SAZ file is created, Fiddler compresses the session archive into a ZIP‐formatted file that can optionally be encrypted or password‐protected. Inside there is a "Raw" folder containing one or more files per captured session - typically a file with the raw client request (sessid#_c.txt), the raw server response (sessid#_s.txt), metadata in XML (sessid#_m.xml), and, in newer versions, optional files for WebSocket (sessid#_w.txt) and gRPC messages (sessid#_g.txt). The archive also contains an index or summary in HTML, often _index.htm, plus other packaging metadata (for example [Content_Types].xml) for compatibility. When you open Fiddler later and import the SAZ file, it rebuilds the sessions within its interface so you can browse headers, responses, timings, etc.
Technically, a SAZ file is a regular ZIP archive that starts with the standard ZIP file signature (bytes 0x50 0x4B 0x03 0x04) and includes identifiable names inside such as "_index.htm", "_c.txt", "_s.txt", "_m.xml", and in newer ones "_g.txt" etc., as well as strings like "SESSION ARCHIVE. SEE HTTP" and "WWW.FIDDLER."
