RSDOC File
What are RSDOC files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a RSDOC file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your RSDOC files.
What is a RSDOC file?
A .RSDOC file is a DesignSpark Mechanical 3D Document file.
DesignSpark Mechanical 3D Document files are native CAD documents produced by DesignSpark Mechanical, a direct-modeling solid CAD tool based on SpaceClaim technology. These files store 3D models, assemblies (multiple parts), "design versions" (different states of the project), and any associated drawing sheets. They are used to save editable designs - solids, surfaces, curves, constraints - for continuing work or sharing with other DesignSpark users.
DesignSpark Mechanical writes files with the .rsdoc filename extension when the user saves their work. These documents retain internal identifiers for edges, faces, bodies, and components, which means that when the model is exported to another format or re-imported, any tags or analysis data applied to features can persist so long as those identifiers are preserved. This format supports versioning and includes drawing sheets where 2D layouts or annotations may accompany the 3D geometry.
Internally, .rsdoc files use a structure following the Open Packaging Convention: they are compressed ZIP-based containers that bundle XML and other resource files. Among the internal components are documents defining relationships (such as document.xml.rels), content types, metadata (creator, last modified), image thumbnails, the main document XML, version history, and checksums. Byte signatures include the signature PK at the start (typical of ZIP files), and internally various strings such as "Content-Types", "document.xml.rels", "thumbnail.png", "SpaceClaim/Schemas/package.xsd", and "renderlist.xmlpk" are found.
