RLE File
What are RLE files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a RLE file or just wondering what they contain? We explain what these files are used for and show you software that we know can open or otherwise handle your files.
What is a RLE file?
RLE files have multiple uses, and Run Length Encoded Bitmap is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.
Run Length Encoded Bitmap
These files are image files that use a lossless compression algorithm to reduce the file size of a bitmap image. A bitmap image is a type of digital image that consists of pixels arranged in a grid, with each pixel representing a specific color.
RLE is a simple compression technique that works by replacing consecutive runs of the same data value with a single value and a count of the number of times that value appears. For example, suppose a bitmap image contains a large area of pixels all the same color. In that case, RLE can compress that area by replacing the individual pixel values with a single value and a count of how many times that value appears. This can significantly reduce the size of the file, making it easier to store and transmit.
RLE is often used for bitmap images that contain large areas of uniform color, such as logos or icons. However, it is not typically used for photographs or other images with a lot of detail, as it can increase the file size in those cases.
