What is a RBXL file?

A .RBXL file is a ROBLOX Location file.

A RBXL file is a binary "place" file used by Roblox Studio to store all of the data that makes up a 3D virtual world, known in Roblox as a "place." The file holds everything that's not a player-controlled character - parts, models, tools, scripts, lighting, terrain, teams and more - organized into a hierarchical data model. Creators build or edit these files in Roblox Studio, which reads and writes .rbxl when saving or exporting places.

Because the .rbxl format is binary, it compacts the data so it takes less disk space and loads faster than its XML-based counterpart (.rbxlx), which stores the same place information in human-readable text. Although .rbxl is not easily human-editable, its structure supports version control or backups when exported from Studio. Roblox supports place files up to about 100 MB in size; beyond that, uploading or publishing may fail.

Technically, a .rbxl file begins with a fixed 14-byte signature (in hex: 3C 72 6F 62 6C 6F 78 21 89 FF 0D 0A 1A 0A) that marks it as the Roblox binary place format. After the signature comes a version number (currently version 0), then a series of "chunks" (named META, SSTR, INST, PROP, PRNT, END) that hold different components of the scene - metadata, class/instance info, property values, parent-child relationships and the file terminator.
