What are RAS files and how to open them

How to open RAS files

Important: Different programs may use files with the RAS file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your RAS file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested ten different RAS openers which you will find listed below.

While Max Payne Data File is a popular type of RAS-file, we know of 3 different uses of the .RAS file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Rigaku XRD RAS Format

We know that one RAS format is Rigaku XRD RAS Format. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.

Sun Raster bitmap

Sun Raster bitmap is an image file format developed by Sun Microsystems for use on SunOS and Solaris Unix systems to store and exchange bitmap (raster) images. It supports monochrome, grayscale, paletted color, and full-color (up to 32 bits per pixel) images, often used for screen captures or graphics generated on Sun workstations. The format is useful when moving images between Unix tools or saving the exact pixel data from display hardware.

Files in this format are typically created by Unix utilities or GUI tools on Sun systems - such as a screen-dump command or snapshot utility - that read frame buffer contents and write them out unprocessed. Once produced, a Sun Raster file can be viewed, edited, or converted by a wide range of image viewers and converters in Unix and cross-platform environments.

The file begins with a 32-byte fixed header containing eight big-endian 32-bit integers: a magic number (always 0x59A66A95), image width in pixels, height in pixels, bit-depth per pixel, byte-length of the image data (excluding the header and colormap), a type field indicating uncompressed or run-length encoded or RGB vs BGR ordering, a colormap type, and the length of the colormap in bytes. If a colormap is present, it immediately follows the header, then the actual pixel data follows.
