What is a PTX file?

PTX files have multiple uses, and Camera RAW Image File (Pentax) is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Camera RAW Image File (Pentax)

PTX files are RAW photos captured by Pentax digital cameras. The photos are uncompressed and unaltered - no processing has been done on the image as it is saved exactly as the camera lens sees it.

RAW images have the largest amount of detail, which is why photographers prefer to use this format. They have maximum detail to work with when post-processing the images, and RAW can easily be edited and converted to other more common image formats.

RealLegal E-Transcript

RealLegal E-Transcript files with the .PTX extension store court-transcript data used by RealLegal's E-Transcript system. They represent legal proceedings - hearings, trials, depositions - and are intended for professional court reporters, attorneys, and clients to view, email, and archive transcripts in a compact, authentic format. PTX files enable both reading and securing of transcripts, including applying digital signatures to preserve integrity.

These files are created by RealLegal's E-Transcript Manager or Reporter Edition software. Once the transcript (with layout, speaker identifiers, page headers, and word index) has been prepared, it is saved as a PTX page layout file. Users can view these with RealLegal's Bundle Viewer or E-Transcript Manager. Transcripts in PTX format are often smaller than other formats and designed to be emailed; RealLegal tools also offer converting PTX into ASCII, RTF, HTML, or XML for broader compatibility.

PTX files include internal fields that help identify them. They contain textual markers such as the words TRANSCRIPT, COMPANY, and PAGEHDR, and include null bytes at certain specific offsets (for example at offset 3, 7, and 10) which act as byte signatures.

V.Flash PTX Bitmap

V.Flash PTX Bitmap files are raster image graphics used by games on the VTech V.Flash educational gaming console, which was released in 2006. They store artwork such as sprites or backgrounds that appear in game discs. These files are not meant to be user-edited directly but are part of the game's built-in assets.

A PTX file is produced by a game developer creating content for a V.Flash game title. When the game is played, the console reads PTX files and renders the images to the screen. If you have a PTX file on your computer, it likely came from dumping or ripping files from a V.Flash game disc. Conversion tools like Tom's Editor can turn PTX into more common image formats.

V.Flash PTX files begin with a fixed‐length header of 44 bytes in little-endian order, containing fields like offset (usually 0x002c), image width, height, and bits per pixel. The image data follows the header in BGR555 format with 1 bit reserved for alpha transparency (most significant bit).
