What are PROJECT files and how to open them

What is a PROJECT file?

Important: Different programs may use files with the PROJECT file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your PROJECT file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested ten different PROJECT openers which you will find listed below.

All known file formats using extension .PROJECT

While CineMorph Project is a popular type of PROJECT-file, we know of 5 different uses of the .PROJECT file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Eclipse Project Settings

Eclipse writes .PROJECT files when you create a project in its workspace. These files describe the metadata Eclipse needs to understand what the project is, what tools and builds to run, and how it relates to other projects. If you see a .PROJECT file, you're looking at a file that makes the project self-describing for Eclipse so it can be shared, versioned, or moved between workspaces without losing configuration.

When you create or import a project in Eclipse, a .PROJECT file is generated in the project's root folder. It's used by Eclipse itself, especially by workspace operations and APIs such as IProjectDescription. You usually don't edit it manually - Eclipse and its plug-ins modify it when you add or remove project natures (which control features or behaviors), build commands (what Eclipse should run when building), or references to other projects.

Technically, a .PROJECT file is XML. It begins with an XML declaration such as <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, followed by a root element named projectDescription. That contains sub-elements such as name, comment, projects (referenced projects), buildSpec (the list of buildCommand elements), and natures (the list of enabled nature elements).

Inside buildSpec you find buildCommand elements that include name and arguments (arguments may be key/value pairs), and inside natures there are nature elements that name the plug-in-specified nature ids. These keywords - projectDescription, buildSpec, buildCommand, natures, nature - are identifiers used to parse the file and define what Eclipse does with it.
