What are PJS files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a PJS file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your PJS files.

What is a PJS file?

A .PJS file is a TestComplete Project Suite file.

A TestComplete Project Suite file with the .pjs extension holds the shared configuration and metadata for a suite of one or more TestComplete projects. It defines how the projects are organized, their common settings, suite-level variables, test item lists, and relationships among the projects included. It is created and maintained by SmartBear TestComplete. When you work on multiple related projects - say modules of the same application - you use a project suite so settings that apply to all projects can be edited in one place.

The .pjs file is written by TestComplete when you create or save a project suite. Besides this file, each tester gets a configuration file (.tcLS) for personal settings, and each project has its own project file (.mds) for project-specific content like scripting, tested applications, and scripts. When running tests, TestComplete loads the .pjs file first to discover which projects to load and which test items to execute, then uses the related .mds and .tcLS files to supply project details and user-specific settings. Project suite variables - settings meant to apply across all projects in the suite - are stored in the .pjs file.

One way to see this format in action is via TestComplete's ProjectSuite object. It offers properties such as FileName and Path that refer to the .pjs file, and Variables which accesses the collection of persistent variables defined at the suite level.

On a technical level, the .pjs file is a text-based settings file stored in an INI-like format containing named sections (for example [Projects] or [Root]) and key-value pairs. It includes entries such as Version, Purpose, and references to project files (for example lines like Projects.Prj0 with Name=... or ID=...) to describe the suite composition.
