What are PDL files and how to open them

What is a PDL file?

PDL files have multiple uses, and PowerDirector Library is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

PowerDirector Library File

PowerDirector Library File (.PDL) files are used by CyberLink PowerDirector to hold an exported snapshot of the Media Library. The Media Library is where PowerDirector stores references to all video, audio, image and other media you've imported for use in editing. A .PDL file functions as a backup or transfer format for that library so you can export your library from one project or version of PowerDirector and import it into another.

PowerDirector creates .PDL files when you choose the Export Library option in the Media Room. Once exported, the .PDL file does not include the actual media assets (video clips, images, audio files), but instead stores metadata such as file paths, thumbnails, filtering settings, and library organization so that the library layout and content references can be restored. To use it, you import the .PDL file in PowerDirector (via Import Library) into another project or version, which repopulates the library based on those references.

Technical details of the .PDL format (such as byte signatures or internal record layout) are not publicly documented. The key identifying feature in file-structure documentation is that the format is used exclusively for PowerDirector's Media Library export/import tools.
